The seventh annual Visualization Development Competition was presented by Texas A&M University at Qatar. The third annual 3D Printing Competition was also held. The two competitions took place on May 5th at Tamuq’s Engineering Building at Education and intended to encourage the most innovative uses of 3D visualization and printing techniques and to enable users to develop and port their applications to visualization and 3D printing systems.

Tamuq holds visualisation, 3D printing competitions

Texas A&M University at Qatar (Tamuq) hosted its seventh annual Visualisation Development Competition, organised by the institution’s research computing group and the third annual 3D Printing Competition, organised by its Mechanical Engineering Programme.
Both competitions took place on May 5 at Tamuq’s Engineering Building at Education City.
The two competitions aim to encourage the most innovative uses of 3D visualisation and printing techniques, and enable users to develop and port their applications to visualisation and 3D printing systems.
Winners of this year’s Visualisation Development Competition were Dr Nikhil Navkar, research executive, and Dr Jean-Marc Peyrat, research scientist in medical imaging, from Qatar Robotics Surgery Centre. Navkar and Peyrat won for their project, “3D Visualisation for Planning Neurosurgical Interventions.”
The first place in the 3D Printing Competition went to a team from Hamad Medical Corporation. Dr Shamsi Abdul Hameed, specialist in the Department of Orthopaedics; Dr Khalid Hasan, resident in the Department of Orthopaedics; and Dr Mohamed al-Ateeq al-Dosari, director of the Bone and Joint Centre, won for their project, “Patient-specific implant spacer in infected TKR using 3D technology.”
The second place went to the “Smart Planter” team from Tamuq led by Dr Mazen Sahir, associate professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Programme. Sahir’s team included students Fahad Aliufairi, Faizan Yousaf and Ahamed Adil Yoosuf.
The third place also went to a Tamuq team, the “Quadcopter Airframe” team of mechanical engineering professor Dr Mansour Karkoub and student Mohamed Khorasani.
“I am very happy to celebrate the winners of these two important competitions,” said Dr Mark H Weichold, the Tamuq dean and CEO. “Both competitions aim to encourage innovative uses of 3D visualisation and printing techniques to enhance research and teaching productivity by using these state-of-the art technologies and facilities we have established here at Tamuq.”
The winning projects were selected by Dr Bing Guo, assistant professor of mechanical engineering at Tamuq and Dr Abdelkader Baggag, senior research scientist at Qatar Computing Research Institute.
Dr Othmane Bouhali, research associate professor and director of Research Computing at Tamuq said: “In seven years, the competition has brought a wide spectrum of applications from different institutions inside Qatar. The competition is also another opportunity for the students to work with researchers and faculty members on a project from design, to visualisation and finally to prototyping.”
